CDC Director Tom Frieden, MD, MPH, highlights the dangers of health care associated infections, as well as the urgent need to detect infections and develop new strategies for prevention. In the wake of a new type of antibiotic-resistant threat - Carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE) - endangering patients with complex medical problems or those in long-term care settings, Frieden advises health departments to bring health facilities together to keep providers informed about disease patterns and ways to detect and prevent further infections.
