ORLANDO, Fla. — Mark Halstead, MD, FAAP, assistant professor of orthopedic surgery at Washington University, discusses a clinical report recently published in Pediatrics that offers guidance on caring for student athletes who suffer concussions. According to Halstead, returning to school may actually exacerbate the symptoms of a concussion. The report is an expansion of an earlier AAP report published in 2010, and recommends a collaborative team approach to managing both the student's physical activity and academic schedule.
